Thursday 25 January
Hosted by wine maker Troy Jones of Payten and Jones and Elliott O'Mara, from Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies in Stamford. This is an opportunity to discover the unique wines of the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia.
These exciting young winemakers, were always destined to work together, Behn (the Payten) drove his first Tractor at the age of 5, Troy (the Jones) was talking by the age of 1 and apparently hasn’t shut up since. Behn’s dad Pete managed Australia’s first organic vineyard and subsequently Payten & Jones is heavily focused on sustainability.
Their wines are maybe a little different – in their words 'they may be murky in the glass and can sometimes throw a bit of sediment. They always look better with a bit of air, served neat in a glass (although straws also work), at the right temperature, with fresh food and great company. The wines are not ‘perfect’ by industry standards, but they have the perfect personality for the situations they’re made for. Drinking these wines is like experiencing a band live, as opposed to listening to a recorded track. There’s minimal intervention and doing nothing to a wine is the hardest part of making it. Always interesting, with a little soul left in.
This all lends itself to an exciting and interesting evening. As usual Head Chef Ben and our kitchen team will create a seasonal menu to match the wines.
The evening starts in The Barn at 7pm, an opportunity to meet and mingle with other guests. At 7.30 we all sit down for dinner, around The Barn table, with wines to accompany each course,
On the night, Troy will guide us through the wines, explaining the different styles, grape varieties and winemaking methods that make each of these wines so different and so special.
It is probably best to have booked a taxi home. However, you are welcome to leave your car here overnight or book one of our six luxurious rooms at Beech House.
We are sure you will have an enjoyable evening, with good food, great wines and convivial company, and hopefully you will have learned something about the magic of wine.
