Thursday 17 October
A French Wine Dinner with Marion Schoffit from the Domaine Schoffit Winery and local wine supplier Victoria Rogers from Gauntleys of Nottingham.
Domaine Schoffit is in its third generation, originally started by Robert Schoffit in 1973. Today it is managed by his grandson, Alexandre, who continues the family tradition along with his mother and father, Marion and Bernard. Based near Colmar in Alsace, the switch in ownership after Robert signalled a change in style, with Bernard investing in 6.5 hectares of land on the famous Rangen de Thann Grand Cru. This could have been deemed a risk, as the vineyards in question had been abandoned long before, with steep slopes that many would have felt were too difficult to work for little return.
However, Bernard has been able to bring out the best from this inhospitable site, now producing wines that are among the finest from this Grand Cru. Working with great respect and care for the terroir, the wines of Schoffit never disappoint. Alexandre and Bernard always achieve a lovely ripeness in their wines, yet even in the more opulent cuvees there is a fabulous balance and finesse. Schoffit is renowned for its particularly exciting cuvee of Chasselas, which is one of the hidden treasures of Alsace. Produced from old vines in the Harth vineyards, Schoffit’s Chasselas has been renowned for many years. With more fruit than the Riesling, less spice than a Gewurztraminer and more restraint than a Pinot Gris, it is an incredibly versatile wine that will perfectly accompany many dishes.
The evening starts in The Olive Branch's Barn at 7pm with an opportunity to meet and mingle with other guests. At 7.30 we all sit down for dinner around The Barn table, with wines to accompany each course.
It is probably best to have booked a taxi home – you are welcome to leave your car here overnight or book one of our six luxurious rooms at Beech House.
We are sure you will have an enjoyable evening with good food, great wines and convivial company, and hopefully, you will have learned something about the magic of wine.
