Thursday 13 October
Hosted by Chuck Cramer, European sales & marketing director for Terlato Wines, and local wine supplier Charles Hawkins from ABS, this is an opportunity to discover the awesome Californian wines of Rutherford Hill, Dueling Pistols and Federalist Vineyards. Chuck is a CA native, fourth-generation LA dude who’s called London his home for the past 23 yards yet never lost the accent. He loves wine, tennis and travel. Chuck also has his own podcast, available on all podcast platforms.
On the night, Chuck will guide us through the wines, explaining the different styles, grape varieties and winemaking methods that make each of these wines so different and so special.
Founded in 1972, Rutherford Hill Winery is a pioneer in the development of California Merlot. The grape growers who founded Rutherford Hill carefully studied the geography of the region and capitalized on climate and soil conditions that resembled those of Pomerol, the small but distinctive Merlot-growing region of Bordeaux. What a promising discovery that was — one that has borne plenty of fruit — specifically, the lush, purple-black grapes that have contributed so much to Rutherford Hill’s success. Today, Merlot remains the flagship wine of the winery, one of the leading Merlots of Napa Valley.
Federalist Vineyards offer big, bold and uncompromising wines that capture the revolutionary spirit of the founding fathers. These wines are robust and straight from the historic American winemaking region of Lodi, where many of the wines were planted back in the 1700s during the actual revolution.
Dueling Pistols wines intertwine two competing varietals in a 50/50 blend where each varietal's fight for power balances that of the other. The Paso Robles Red blend is composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah creating a richly textured wine. The Dry Creek Valley Red blend is composed of equal amounts of Zinfandel and Syrah creating a harmonious, non-angular wine. With both wines, each component is fermented separately, then combined together in French oak barrels to age. The depth and character of the wine inspired a compelling label, which resulted in a story, satisfying both palate and curiosity.
Our head chef Luke Holland has created a seasonal menu to match the wines and with his team will prepare, cook and present all the dishes.
The evening starts at 7pm with an opportunity to meet our host and mingle with other guests. At 7.30pm we sit down around one large table in the ‘Barn’ for the dinner, with wines to accompany each course.
It is probably best to have booked a taxi home. However, you are welcome to leave your car here overnight or book one of our six luxurious rooms at Beech House.
We are sure you will have an enjoyable evening, with good food, great wines and convivial company, and hopefully you will have learned something about the magic of wine.
